The number of corona cases is increasing in Skåne. Now, as before, it is important to take responsibility for limiting the spread of infection and protecting the elderly.

Just a week ago, on October 15, the Skåne Region updated the rules for those living with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Before the rule change was made, home quarantine only applied to those who had the virus. “By also considering household contacts with infected people as a suspected case of covid-19, we are now taking another step in the work of preventing the spread of the infection,” he says on skane.se.
Since then, the situation in Skåne has worsened. At Wednesday’s press conference, infection control doctor Eva Melander drew the grim numbers: 300 new cases have been found in the last 24 hours and the number of infections now exceeds 100 on average over seven days. Since March 2, a total of 7,438 cases have been reported, although only two people from Skåne are currently in intensive care. A total of 284 people have died in the region in the covid-19 suites. Young people between the ages of 20 and 29 make up a quarter of those infected, and most of those now affected have mild symptoms.

“These are workplaces, schools; we have seen the infection spread at larger gatherings like funerals, parties, after work. This is now happening in the community,” said Melander, who emphasized the importance of everyone who they can avoid traveling by public transport.

Regional Director Alf Jönsson emphasized at the press conference the importance of everyone helping to keep the infection low:

“Everyone has to ask the question: What can I do?” declared in an appeal to the people of Skåne to take personal responsibility.

The coronavirus is now spreading across the world again. In the Republic of Ireland, the strict rules restricting movement this spring are now making a comeback. Britain is preparing to shut down entire ends of the country. Belgium is closing in on what the country’s own health minister has described as “a tsunami” and has imposed the first night curfew since the wartime occupation. In large, populous countries like the United States, Brazil, Russia, and India, the number of infections is increasing again.

Sweden, unlike most other countries, has applied a more permissive strategy to reduce infection. The basic idea is freedom under responsibility, the state and the authorities issue recommendations. By appealing to common sense and the people’s willingness to cooperate, Sweden has avoided strict bans and threats of draconian fines.

Skåne was slightly affected during the spring and summer. Not least, the virus stayed away from nursing homes in the region. But when the infection rises again now, the model is put to the test. Now it’s up to Skåne to show that the model based on trust rather than coercion works.

Therefore, keep your distance both inside and out, wash your hands, and stay home if you or someone in the family is suspected of carrying the virus.
