Protesters flee as police fire tear gas to disperse protests in Lagos on Wednesday.
Anger and grief are high in Nigeria after several people are reportedly shot dead during a peaceful demonstration in the large city of Lagos on Tuesday night.
The governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, describes the incident as one of the darkest moments in the nation’s history.
According to Amnesty International, an unknown number of protesters were opened fire and shot dead by the security forces. The incident took place after Sanwo-Olu decided on a curfew in Lagos on the grounds that criminals had infiltrated the demonstrations.
The country’s army denies that its soldiers fired at the crowd and Sanwo-Olu claims there are no victims. Instead, he speaks of 25 injured and promises a proper investigation.
“I am aware that the responsibility is mine and I will work with the federal government to get to the bottom of this unfortunate event,” he said.
Thousands of Nigerians have demonstrated to demand an end to police brutality in the West African country. The decision to disband the Sars special forces on October 11 did not satisfy the protesters’ discontent.
