Four of the 19 municipalities contacted by Hem & Hyra respond that they have demolished or plan to demolish apartment buildings.

The municipality of Hultsfred plans to demolish a total of 150 apartments. In Billingsfors, in Bengtsfors Township, 34 apartments will be demolished. The municipality of Filipstad plans to demolish 20 in Persberg, 18 in Nykroppa and nine in Lesjöfors.

Demolition is also planned in Hällefors municipality, Örebro county, but it has not yet been decided how many will be demolished.

Social dumping

All 19 municipalities have been affected by so-called “social dumping”, in which people who depend on subsidies have been encouraged to move there.

People move mainly from Stockholm with the surrounding municipalities, but also from Gothenburg.

The Minister of Civil Affairs, Lena Micko (S), writes in an email to the newspaper that “the review shows once again that social dumping is a real problem and that it has consequences for the affected municipalities.”

“They shouldn’t have to live like this”

The 100 apartments to be demolished in Hultsfred were previously rented by the Swedish Immigration Board.

– The renovation costs would have generated such high rents in this area and we have no queues, Helena Grybäck-Svensson, CEO of Hultsfreds Bostäder municipal, tells Hem & Hyra.

When asked why the municipality does not just sell the houses, Helena Grybäck-Svensson responds that they are “afraid that the properties will end up in the wrong hands.”

She says that the renovation costs are so high that Hultsfreds Bostäder suspects that it would be difficult for any other player to comply with them and that a new private owner would therefore keep the apartments in their current state.

– We do not want our neighbors in the municipality to have to live like this, he says.

The municipality of Hultsfred will also demolish another 50 apartments in Virserum, 30 km southwest of Hultsfred.
