Temporary law will end congestion in buses and stores

Many have harshly criticized the rules during the pandemic for being unfair. Cultural and sporting events cannot accommodate more than 50 people while congestion is reported in public transportation, shops and restaurants.

– We need to find a way to quickly produce legislation where we can take action that we cannot take today with the Infection Control Act and the Public Order Act. Many comparisons have been made with shopping malls, bathing areas, public transport where the current legislation does not apply, says Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren (S) to Dagens Nyheter.

The new law will be temporary and the government expects it to take effect by summer 2021. Hallengren says the issue is legally complicated and the government simply hasn’t had time to address it before.

Tobias Billström, leader of the group of moderates in the Riksdag, is cautiously positive.

– Depending on how it is designed, it can be correct in essence, regulate the crowds in a more logical way. Today, crowds at soccer games and shopping malls are treated completely differently, Billström tells TT.

Today, the government can only impose visiting limits for what the law calls public gatherings and public events, including concerts, theater and film performances, demonstrations, and sports competitions.

On October 8, the government decided to extend the decision on a 50-person public ceiling.

The government is now also preparing a new permanent law on pandemics, which will be introduced in the long term and can be used in future pandemics.
