To overcome crowds in public transport, shops and bathing areas, the government wants to introduce a new law.

This is what the Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren (S) reports to DN.

– This pandemic has only just begun, he says.

The legislation that exists today can only affect what is considered public gatherings and public events, such as demonstrations, sporting or cultural events.

In order to also be able to regulate how many people can stay in, for example, a store, a bus or a place to bathe, the government now wants to introduce the so-called pandemic law.

This is what the Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren (S) tells DN.

Coming next summer

– We need to find a way to quickly produce legislation where we can take measures that we cannot do today with the Infection Control Law and the Public Order Law, says the Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren (S) to the newspaper.

Fast in a legislative context, on the other hand, is relative. It is not possible to introduce a law like this in a few weeks, says the Minister of Social Affairs. The Pandemic Law could affect constitutionally protected freedom and therefore must be taken seriously. Earlier this summer, the government expects the new law to go into effect.

– This pandemic has just begun. We’re probably not even in the middle, but we still have a long time to go before the pandemic ends. It is a pandemic of historic proportions in a crisis that we have not seen before. We have had to deal with so many changes and curfews. We just haven’t had time to do all the parts, Lena Hallengren tells the newspaper.

At the same time, he says that the nightclub business, as it has been conducted lately, is not doing well.

The government will also investigate a longer-term law that may apply in the event of pandemics in the future.
