To reduce the spread of covid-19 in the country, the government is currently working on a law against the pandemic. With current legislation, the government can regulate what is a public gathering or event, such as demonstrations, concerts, and sports.
Now the government wants to expand its powers with the help of a temporary law. These include being able to limit the number of passengers on public transport and regulate opening hours and the number of visitors to the store.
– We need to find a way to quickly produce legislation where we can take action that we cannot take today with the Infection Control Act and the Public Order Act, says Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren.
– Many comparisons have been made with shopping centers, bathing areas, public transport where current legislation does not apply.
When will the legislation come into force?
– When I say fast and hasty, I mean it with great respect for limiting people’s freedom and limiting business possibilities. There is nothing that goes with a couple of weeks. It is complicated legislation that must be handled with care because it limits constitutionally protected freedom. But we hope to have the new law in place this summer, he says.
The pandemic has been going on for a long time. Why doesn’t this proposal arrive until the end of October?
– This pandemic has just begun. We’re probably not even in the middle, but we still have a long time to go before the pandemic ends. It is a pandemic of historic proportions in a crisis that we have not seen before. We have had to deal with so many changes and curfews. We just haven’t had time to do all the parts.
Nightclubs have been criticized for being open and congestion allowed in shopping malls, while cultural and sporting events are capped at 50 people maximum. Will it change now?
– I don’t think you should see this as the only part, but we have made a lot of changes. There are restrictions for restaurants when it comes to service permits, restrictions also on elderly care with restraining orders and restrictions on public gatherings.
– But if you have a nightclub business that we could participate in, especially last weekend, where they are very close to each other and they just don’t keep their distance, that’s not right.
The Center Party wrote on September 30 in the DN debate that they wanted to see a new anti-pandemic team. Among other things, they wrote that a law based on the ability of companies to avoid congestion is needed. In this way, sporting and cultural events could receive more visitors than the 50 allowed, while other activities would have different conditions.
The government will also investigate a long-term law that can be applied in future pandemics.
