The patient crawled to the gurney, had a cardiac arrest and died
A patient who was crawling to a stretcher to go to the ambulance suffered cardiac arrest and died. The ambulance staff have now reported according to Lex Maria for lack of effort.
The incident occurred in northwest Skåne this summer.
The patient had recently been treated in hospital for salt disorders. After returning home from the hospital, the patient passed out and vomited several times.
An ambulance was called to the house. Then the patient had to “crawl onto the stretcher when there are tight spaces,” says the lex Maria report to Ivo, the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate.
“On the way to the stretcher, he deteriorates … and has a circulatory arrest.” Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was started and the patient was taken to the emergency room where he died. The cause of death is considered to be severe dehydration and possible salt disturbance leading to shock and circulatory arrest.
According to the report to Ivo, the ambulance personnel examined the patient “not adequately” before he tried to reach the stretcher. “Needle and liquid” should have been considered, says the Skåne Region report to Ivo.
The incident, which has “caused serious medical damage”, will now be investigated by the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate.
