Muhammad was alone behind the counter at his cousin Raja Omer’s Godisnissen store in Halmstad when the lone thief broke into the room, about which Hallandsposten was the first to write.
“I quickly realized that it was a robbery,” says Muhammad. He was masked in front of his face, wearing black gloves and waving a gun.
The thief was in his 20s and demanded to get all the money that was in the store.
– He threatened to kill me if I did not follow his instructions, says Muhammad.
The surveillance film shows how Muhammad is forced to open the cash register and hand over both bills and coins. In total, it should have been about 14,000 SEK.
Get in behind the counter
You can also see how the thief then goes behind the counter to look for more money. During the dramatic seconds, he has the weapon clenched between his legs.
– He stayed and thought there were more bills. The thief knew we were Western Union agents. He also demanded that my wallet be taken from me, says Muhammad.
The surveillance film also shows how the thief opens a plastic bag and demands that it also be filled with cigarettes.
He then forces Muhammad into a room behind the store, believing that there are additional things to carry.
– It was an unpleasant and shocking experience. It is no exaggeration to say that he was very scared, he says.
When the thief realized that he was being filmed by a surveillance camera, he demanded that the footage be deleted.
– I explained that it did not work, the system does not allow it, says Muhammad.
When they both return to the store soon after, the situation drastically changes.
Gets distracted
Then a man walked into the store to buy and the movie shows how the thief is suddenly distracted. In a hurry
But the door has slammed shut and Muhammad sees his chance to pinch the thief next to the glass of the front door.
In the end, the thief is apparently defeated on the store floor. At the same time, Muhammad instructs the other client, who has already taken over the gun, to call the police.
– They arrived a few minutes later and arrested the thief, he says.
For Muhammad, it was a shocking experience. He is originally from Pakistan and came to Sweden last year to study his master of science engineering degree at Chalmers.
In January, several young men robbed him in Gothenburg. He then took a break from his studies and moved in with his cousin in Halmstad.
I heard good about Sweden
– And so it happens, adds Muhammad himself. I had heard a lot about how Sweden would be such a safe country, now I no longer dare to walk past people in the city when it is dark and I don’t want to be alone in the store after 5pm.
Muhammad has a clear picture: the penalties are too low in Sweden, so crime thrives.
Later, the police wrote on their website that the incident was classified as an attempted robbery. The suspect was arrested and the weapon in question is believed to have been a compressed air pistol.
