It has been exactly five years since Swedish publisher Gui Minhai was imprisoned in China.
He was arrested on October 17, 2015 and has been in custody ever since, with the exception of a few months the following year when he was released. He was sentenced in February this year to ten years in prison without public trial. China accuses him of “providing intelligence to foreign powers.”
The country also claims that Gui Minhai has renounced his Swedish citizenship, something that Elisabeth Löfgren, chair of the Swedish Pen’s Prison Writers Committee, is deeply critical of.
– A legal scandal has been repeated during these five years. There is nothing that complies with international legal principles, he tells Expressen.
On Saturday, Foreign Minister Ann Linde (S) reiterated Sweden’s demand that Gui Minhai be released and also noted that he is an EU citizen. “Sweden asks China to release Gui Minhai so that he can reunite with his daughter and family,” he wrote on Twitter.
Gui Minhai’s daughter, Angela Gui, does not believe that China is listening to the Foreign Minister and therefore wants to see clearer demands from the EU.
– It should be clear that it is not possible to have a normal relationship with a country that violates the rights of our citizens to this degree. We hope a demonstration is not necessary next year, but until then we will continue to demand Dad’s release, he tells Expressen.
