Jakob Hellman is back – with songs about death

The second difficult album: this is what the sequel to a successful debut is often called. But for Jakob Hellman, it got even worse than that, it just never came.

– The best explanation is probably that I kept away from the people who could pressure me. I first moved from Stockholm and walked away from this with the music and everything. I wasn’t happy with what I recorded and I didn’t want to make fun of myself as much as I thought it was my duty, says Jakob Hellman.

He himself says that he never really wanted to be as big as he got, that he would have liked to play on smaller local venues. But the fact that there was never a sequel did not make him forget, rather, only the mystique and cult grew around it.

– I have almost used it a bit, I have been able to walk and play without having any new material, because there has been curiosity all the time. It seems that there is a need for something stagnant, I become an oasis in time.

I did not want to disappoint

But 30 years after “… and the great sea”, he was persuaded to go on an anniversary tour, and in connection with that he started recording new music and accepted the TV show “Much better”. Suddenly, it became harder than ever to dodge him.

– You won’t want to disappoint everyone again because I’ve said so many times that “I make an album after the summer”. But you probably wouldn’t have done it so fast if you hadn’t met these deadlines.

Although at least one of the reasons it actually became a record this time around is that he had people around him pushing and supporting him.

– I have listened to others much more now and I have tried things although I did not understand why, and it turned out well.

Songs about death

Musically, the new album is similar to the previous one, it has what Jakob Hellman himself calls typical Jakob Hellman melodies.

– I sing more casually, I think I have found a tone. The difference is that the lyrics are no longer about despised love. They stay a long time after death, almost comically long if you look at the song titles, but in a happy and almost victorious way.

As a 24-year-old rookie, everything in life revolved around music. Now, almost 32 years later, there are other things that are also important.

– This means you can also be the one watching, not just the one being watched, says Jakob Hellman.
