The Stockholm Region presents strategy and preparation for the large-scale covid-19 vaccination of the inhabitants of the region. The research is presented by Ella Bohlin (KD).
More than 70 people, risk groups and health professionals will not unexpectedly be the first in line in Stockholm when the covid-19 vaccine becomes available.
– According to the WHO, an effective vaccine is the only way to stop the spread of the infection. We need to be ready as a region when the vaccine is in place, says Ella Bohlin, KD regional councilor and president of the Swedish Board of Health Knowledge.
On May 26, the Swedish Healthcare Knowledge Board in the region commissioned the director of health and medical care to investigate how large-scale vaccination against COVID-19 should be carried out when an effective vaccine is available on the market.
On Thursday, the research was presented by regional councilor Ella Bohlin (KD), who said that people over 70, risk groups and health and care personnel will receive the vaccine first.
That group is believed to consist of just over 700,000 people in the Stockholm region.
– After that group, priority will be given to other people over 18 who are not evaluated as a risk group, and then the slightly older ones will come first, he says.
Lower risk of disease
The third and last priority group for the covid-19 vaccine will be children and young people.
– The Swedish Public Health Agency has assessed that children have a much lower risk of getting sick, therefore they do not need to be vaccinated in the first phase, says Ella Bohlin.
As much as possible, it should be the same actors who get vaccinated against COVID-19 who are usually responsible for vaccination against seasonal flu, says Bohlin.
Millions of doses
– We hope that we will be able to vaccinate at the beginning or the middle of next year, but there are quite large uncertainties, in which, first of all, you must make sure that we have an effective vaccine, says Ella Bohlin.
In total, the need for the Stockholm Region is believed to be 3.7 million doses of vaccine. Sweden as a whole has so far signed agreements guaranteeing access to 6 million doses, of which 1.4 million would end up in the Stockholm Region according to the proportion of the population. Negotiations on additional agreements are ongoing.
However, Bohlin is not concerned that there will be a shortage of vaccines in the region when the time comes.
– I am not worried that we will run out of vaccines, but we have a very good dialogue with several pharmaceutical companies. My hope is that we have access to the 3.7 million doses we need.
