Last week, the number of new covid-19 cases in Västra Götaland increased compared to the previous week. Last week 537 new cases were reported. This is the highest figure since mid-August.
Gothenburg accounts for most of the increase, and especially among people of working age.
Thomas Wahlberg, an infection control doctor in the Västra Götaland region, warns that the infection often spreads in the workplace and after work.
– You forget how important it is to keep your distance and feel crowded both in meetings and in coffee shops. We can see that it is a common way of spreading the infection. It’s very important to always keep your distance when we can, it says in a press release.
Young adults account for a third of cases
Young adults between the ages of 20 and 29 account for a third of all new cases.
– The virus is transmitted in many ways, especially at parties and others in social contexts. I’m also thinking about the next fall break. It’s important to socialize on a small scale and make sure you keep your distance when we go to parties and other events, says Thomas Wahlberg.
At the same time, relatively few still need hospital care. According to the region, about thirty people with covid-19 are treated in a hospital in Västra Götaland on a normal day.
Director of Health and Medical Care Ann Söderström emphasizes that new patients who are seriously ill are constantly arriving.
– It can be believed that no new person will become seriously ill because the number of patients is quite stable at the moment. But it is not the same thirty people who receive care week after week: Infection in society makes new people sick all the time, he says.
