Last week, the government decided to stick to the maximum limit of 50 people in, among other things, football and ice hockey games due to the increasing spread of the infection in Sweden.
At the same time, the great exercise races await answers if they can be done and, if so, how. Just on Wednesday, the Swedish Public Health Agency (FHM) was commissioned by the government to investigate the issue and make recommendations for exercise and outdoor sports activities.
The assignment must be reported continuously for the government, initially on November 1 and December 1 respectively.
– It is moving well in the right direction. We have tried to be heard that we need a review of the application of this law of order, which hits sport so terribly, says Johan Eriksson.
Tens of thousands of skiers, thousands of officials, the extensive business activity surrounding the classic race, a million spectators who usually follow the race on television … They all wonder: Will there be a race between Berga Village in Sälen and Mora ?
It burns in the knots and Johan Eriksson believes that it is no longer possible to wait for a message from politicians. Because it is time to wait considering the enormous organizational effort required to carry out Vasaloppet Week.
What messages do you need and when do you need them?
– Now they have finally given FHM the task of investigating and it is quite scary that it is an investigation that is going to start. Now we are talking about the month of December and, in our case, Vasaloppet Week starts at the end of February. It’s a very short time, but we have a plan that in late October or early November we have to come out with some kind of message on how to do it.
Is it possible to solve in such a short time and in such a short time?
– We see that we have to move towards the change of the month. We do not have time to wait for the government’s message, but we must find a solution to be able to do it independently. It is with these conditions that we are working very intensively at the moment to find an offer that can work this winter.
Can you already give us a hint as to what form of Vasaloppet Week can be offered?
– No, I don’t even want to give any alternative at this time because it can generate strange speculation. We choose to work very hard internally so that we can get a message across in a few weeks.
Johan Eriksson says that more and more people are getting in touch with questions.
– It’s a pressure on us that’s screwed up. You want to know how to prepare. With full respect for what is happening in the outside world, we must leave a message.
Even if you don’t want to reveal anything about your plans now, what is a realistic Vasaloppet week with adaptation to a pandemic that will last for a long time?
– Of course, it is the adaptations that apply to the greatest extent to us as well. Safety and secure meetings are the most important thing before we even start thinking about anything else.
– The delicacy is to get an offer such that people can ski and feel safe. I think we have a solution that people will be happy with, but we want to work on it before we say anything. We hope to present it by the end of the month, says Johan Eriksson.
