On May 26, the Swedish Healthcare Knowledge Board commissioned the Stockholm region health and healthcare director to investigate how large-scale vaccination against COVID-19 should be carried out, when an effective vaccine becomes available in the market.
On Thursday, the investigation was presented by Regional Councilor Ella Bohlin (KD). She says that people over 70, risk groups and health and care personnel will receive the vaccine first.
The groups it is estimated at about 700,000 people in the region.
– After that group, priority will be given to other people over 18 who are not evaluated as a risk group, and then the slightly older ones will come first, he says.
The third and final priority group for the covid-19 vaccine is children.
– The Swedish Public Health Agency has assessed that children have a much lower risk of getting sick, therefore they do not need to be vaccinated in the first phase, says Ella Bohlin.
As far as possible It should be the same actors who vaccinate against Covid-19 that are usually responsible for vaccination against seasonal flu, says Bohlin.
– We hope that we will be able to vaccinate at the beginning or the middle of next year, but there are great uncertainties, in which, first of all, you must ensure that we have an effective vaccine, says Ella Bohlin.
In total, the need for the Stockholm Region is believed to be 3.7 million doses of vaccine. Sweden as a whole has so far signed agreements guaranteeing access to 6 million doses, of which 1.4 million would end up in the Stockholm Region according to the proportion of the population. Negotiations on additional agreements are ongoing.
Ella Bohlin is, however don’t worry there will be a shortage of vaccines in the region when the time comes.
– I am not worried that we will run out of vaccines, but we have a very good dialogue with several pharmaceutical companies. My hope is that we have access to the 3.7 million doses we need.
