The people’s home in Orminge began to burn overnight and the police are now investigating the incident as a homicidal fire.
The building has meant a lot to the city, according to Marko Lehtosalo, whose famous character Markoolio was born in the house.
– It feels very boring, he says.
It has burned intensely in Folkets hus in Orminge in the Nacka municipality east of Stockholm.
– It is a two-story wooden building. 20 times 50 meters. It is a fully developed fire in the northern part of the building, says Patrick Johansson in the Södertörn fire service on Thursday morning.
The alarm went off at 04:14 and the rescue service has had great resources on site.
– The construction of the roof of the building begins to give way and then it is very difficult for us to limit the fire. So the building is likely to burn down, Patrick Johansson said in the morning.
At 0945 hours, the rescue service announced that the fire was under control and that there was no risk of it spreading. The extinction work, on the other hand, will continue for a long time.
– The construction of the building may collapse and therefore it is not safe for our staff to work near it. We extinguish high-rise vehicles. The work will probably continue until tomorrow, says Mikael Nygen, operations manager of the Södertörn fire brigade association.
Investigate arson
It is unclear what caused the fire, but police are investigating the incident as arson.
– The burglar alarm went off a few minutes before the fire alarm went off. At the moment we do not have any suspects, but we will continue to investigate this during the day, says Ola Österling, press spokesman for the Stockholm Police.
Markoolio: Damn boring
One of Orminge’s biggest profiles, Marko Lehtosalo, perhaps better known by his stage name Markoolio, says the building means a lot to the city, not least through its activities for seniors.

The house has also meant a lot to him personally.
– In fact, it was in this house that the character of Markoolio was born. My friends and I were there and we shot a lot of local TV and did sketches and things like that, he says.
He says that a lot of material, like old VHS tapes, from that time has been lost in the fire.
– This house also burned down in 2008. Not as much as now, but then I had a little concert and raised money for reconstruction. He has given me a lot and I wanted to give him back, says Marko Lehtosalo.
If there will be a concert now, he has not decided.
