Two men who had previously been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a 70-year-old man in Markaryd have been released following a decision by the Göta Court of Appeal.
The Court of Appeal hearing has concluded and the men have been released pending the verdict, reports SVT Nyheter Småland.
Attorney Torgny Dahlberg, who is defending one of the defendants, sees it as a sign that they can be released.
– It is in line with the difficulties that the prosecutor has had during this case, he tells SVT.
Already when the two men received their life sentences from the Växjö District Court in July, defense attorneys said that it had not been proven that the crime was committed by two people. During the trial in the Court of Appeals, they have blamed each other, according to local media.
The 70-year-old man was found tied up and dead in the woods in the summer of 2019 after being missing for ten days. The two men who were later tried and convicted are believed to have stolen the man’s Volvo and tried to withdraw money with the man’s ATM card. The duo, who hails from Ukraine, crossed the Öresund Bridge and were sought out internationally. One of them was stopped on a highway in Germany on August 20 and the other in Poland in December.
Plaintiff’s assistant Eva Almström expresses her great disappointment at the release in an interview with SVT:
– All I can say is that the disappointment is total. A colossal disappointment.
