Almost four hours, that long was visiting time in the country’s emergency rooms last year. Each tenth visit lasted more than eight hours.

The length of stay in the country’s emergency departments increased by five minutes compared to 2018, according to statistics from the National Board of Health and Welfare.

On average, patients spent 3 hours and 44 minutes in the emergency room last year. Older people stay longer than younger people. Every day, 95 patients over the age of 80 spend more than 8 hours and 41 minutes in the emergency room.

Long stays are more common in metropolitan regions than in the rest of the country. Södersjukhuset in Stockholm had the longest visiting time of 5 hours and 53 minutes. The largest increase in length of stay was recorded at Lund University Hospital, which increased by 32 minutes to 5 hours and 14 minutes.

The increase in the country is occurring despite the decrease in the number of visits to the emergency room. In total, 25,000 fewer patients went to the emergency room last year compared to 2018.

At the same time, the waiting time to see a doctor in the emergency room remains stable at 58 minutes on average. The differences are big: from 2 hours and 3 minutes in Södersjukhuset to 18 minutes in the Gällivare hospital in Norrbotten.
