– For many years it has been said that Astrid Lindgren’s shortcode must be broken in order for Astrid Lindgren’s research to move forward. But if you look at his manuscript, you only see, in Astrid Lindgren’s own words: crumbs, says literary scholar Malin Nauwerck, who is leading the script decoding work.

Around 700 blocks of stenograms will be decoded and digitized after decades at the Royal Library in Stockholm. The hope is that Astrid Lindgren’s creative writing processes will be revealed to the world.

The project combines the humanities and computer science. By inviting stenographers, most of whom are retired today, Malin Nauwerck hopes to get help decoding a sufficient mass of text for the algorithms to take over.

– I think we have to take advantage, because it is a generation that may not be fully alert for so long. Then there are the people who learn shorthand when they are young, they come new all the time, but it becomes more and more of a hobby activity than a professional skill, says Malin Nauwerck.
