Threat of mistrust following the Finnish mouthguard riot – Nyheter (Ekot)

– It seems that the government wanted to give an image that wearing mouth guards was useless, says Sari Multala, Member of Parliament for the National Coalition Party who is behind the proposal to arouse distrust of the Social Democratic Minister of Family and Care Krista Kiuru.

Although several experts pointed out that wearing mouth guards had a benefit, the government decided not to advise people to do so and did not take the experts’ advice seriously, he says.

But the government means that the criticism is unfounded. The reason they chose not to recommend mouth guards this spring was because there were a shortage of them, it would have been irresponsible to recommend something that not everyone can buy, Prime Minister Sanna Marin said at a hearing in the Riksdag on the latest allegations.

It is the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic that the government and the opposition have fought over an issue in this way. During the spring and summer, there has basically been a stalemate, until now.

The issue of mouth protection has been controversial during the spring and summer, but less criticism has been heard since THL, the Institute for Health and Well-being, recommended in August that Finns wear it.

But despite the recommendation it is far from everyone who does it, and it is the government’s fault, Sari Multala believes.

– There are still many who do not use a mouth guard even though they have recommended it. One reason for this is that the government did not want to say last spring that there was a benefit to wearing mouth guards.

Tomorrow, the Riksdag will vote on confidence in Minister Krista Kiuru. As the ruling parties have a majority, it is unlikely to be overthrown.

All ruling parties, as well as Prime Minister Sanna Marin, have expressed their continued confidence in Kiuru.
