Helene Odenjung will leave her post as group leader and school counselor for the Liberals in Gothenburg at the end of the year, which she announced earlier this year.
When party members voted on September 25 on who they wanted to see as the new city councilor after Helene Odenjung, Eva Flyborg got the most votes.
She won by 85 votes before Axel Darvik who received 83 votes.

But when the party’s nominating committee put forward its proposal on October 5, it was Axel Darvik, a member of the council and elected since last year to the board of the Liberal party, who was nominated to succeed Odenjung.
– It was a sad message. But in politics you have to be prepared for both ups and downs. “I congratulated Axel today and we have maintained good relations,” Eva Flyborg said after the committee’s proposal.
The message: not a challenge
But during a press conference on Tuesday, attended by both Flyborg and Darvik, Eva Flyborg announced that she has no intention of challenging her party colleague for office.
– We both have strong support in the game. It has been a fairly close race, but Axel has received the nomination from the nominating committee. Now we have come together and reasoned and see how we can move forward. I am very convinced that we must assume responsibility for the party together. I will support Axel as the candidate for group leader of the Liberals in the General Assembly. It is important that we unite in the game. In less than two years, we will go to the polls again and we need to gather our forces to be strong in the future, says Flyborg.
Axel Darvik:
– We need several strong liberal profiles in Gothenburg who together can take our leadership. I see Eva as a key player for liberals going forward. That is why Eva is my deputy group leader candidate in our council group.
Flyborg will also be the spokesperson for local security policy.
This means that Axel Darvik will take over as city councilor after Helene Odenljung. The formal election will take place on October 19.
The position as group leader is decided within the municipal council group at a later time.
