“On the Infinite”, “Charter” and the documentary “Greta”. These three films have a chance to become the Swedish Oscars in the category “Best International Film”. This was announced by the Swedish Film Institute on Tuesday morning. The Oscar Committee is made up of eight industry professionals who have jointly nominated the candidates.
– In committee, they analyze which films have the best chance of going far. These films, for example, have attracted attention at international film festivals. Plus, they have great artistic stature and strong stories, says Theo Tsappos of the Swedish Film Institute, an advisor to the Oscar Committee.
Roy Andersson has directed “On the Infinite” (2019): an exhibition of the beauty and brutality of human life. Existence is explored here, under the guidance of a female voice. Andersson received the Silver Lion for Best Director at the 2019 Venice Film Festival.
“Charter” (2020) is Amanda Kernell’s drama about a divisive custody dispute. Desperate, the mother takes Alice with her children on a trip to the Canary Islands. Kernell is nominated for the 2020 Nordic Council Film Award, to be awarded on October 27.
“Greta” (2020), or “I am Greta”, is Nathan Grossman’s documentary portrait of climate activist Greta Thunberg. For more than a year, the director has followed the teenager, from the school strike to the world tour. “Greta” is Nathan Grossman’s debut as a feature film director.
On November 3, it will be presented which of the films will be the Swedish contribution to the Oscar. The Oscars will be held on April 25, 2021, about two months later than usual due to the corona pandemic.
