The attack took place west of Lakenesjön in the municipality of Hagfors. During the morning, the dog had left the ground with a cow and a calf. The owner managed to connect the dog after a few kilometers and released her again. The dog seized a carriage with a cow, a calf and a bull. But even these animals were light and soon left the hunting team’s fields.

The dogs and elk continued north over two hunting areas before the bitch returned with at least one of the elk.

In the immediate area

– I tried to take her again, but then I collided with the elk, says the owner of the dog who has chosen to remain anonymous.

In a deep valley between two roads, it once again became a solid foundation. The dog’s owner started walking towards the dog to try to connect. A stream runs in the valley and he has trouble hearing the skull.

– I saw in the mirror that he fell silent and moved. I kept going, but soon discovered that she was completely still, says the dog’s owner.

I found the dead dog

In that situation, he realized that something serious had happened. He was a few hundred meters from his dog and quickly reached the place.

Only to find that the dog was already dead, and that the wolf or wolves had already started eating the dog.

– Maybe it was about five minutes, says the dog’s owner sadly.

At his feet is his hunting companion, the best friend of children and a very good hunting dog.

– How will we be able to hunt here in the future? Who else would want to leave their dog here? I can’t even think of what to do with hunting during the fall, and we haven’t even started yet, says the dog’s owner.

Wolf found

When the county board of directors nature conservationists Magnus Nystrand and Lizz Hansson inspected the dog, they were able to quickly establish that the dog had been killed by a wolf. In the case of dogs, the dog has typical deep-bite bite injuries on the thighs and back, the abdomen is open, and parts of the dog are eaten.

A wolf kit was taken near the dead dog for analysis and at the scene they were also able to affirm that the dog was released about 75 meters from the place where it was attacked for the first time, to the place where it was later found.

– Clearly it is a wolf that killed the dog, but we currently do not know from what territory, says Lizz Hansson.

It can be Gårdsjöreviret or a newly formed territory. During the summer, a wolf bitch from the Tönsen district attacked sheep in Bäckalund, a few kilometers west of where the dog was now being killed.

A wolf’s attack on the dog was the first during this year’s moose hunt in Värmland County.
