Over the weekend, the Danish Pumpkin Growing Championship was decided. He ended up with a Nordic record.
The previous record was Swedish and was held by Jesper Lidberg from Motala who last summer presented a pumpkin weighing 857 kilos.
The new record is 970.4 kilos and it is Jens Peder Skønager from Ribe who has grown the pumpkin.
– My method is “top secret”, so I don’t want to reveal it. But I can tell you that I used a lot of horse manure and watered it liberally. So the varied Danish summer has done wonders.
“Hair dryer and baby powder”
The competing pumpkins were displayed and weighed at Tivoli in Copenhagen over the weekend. It was a remarkably proud winner who patted his giant pumpkin.
– I have stopped him every night with two wool blankets, he says.
But despite all the care, things happened that were not allowed to happen and that could ruin everything. The pumpkin has a tear.
– I had to treat it with a hair dryer and baby powder. But I did not sleep for several nights.
He had almost expected to become a Danish champion. He already had that title because last year he was able to wear a pumpkin that weighed 443.6 kilos. And this year’s pumpkin was significantly larger. When the scale showed 970.4 kilos, there was a hiss from the Tivoli audience.
– It’s not that bad anyway, says Jens Peder Skønager.
– Now I’m going for the world record,
The world record is from 2016 and is held by Belgian Mathias Willemijns. Hans 1 pump 190.5 kilos. So there is “only” just over 200 kilos left for Jens Peder Skønager.
