The Expert: The hole in Estonia caused the disaster

Since the documentary “Estonia – the find that changes everything” revealed a 4 meter high and 1.2 meter wide hole in the side of the hull, various theories have been raised as to what may have caused it.

But Anders Ulfvarson, a professor emeritus at Chalmers, now says the bow visor is unlikely to fall off and at the same time damage the hull and is convinced that the hole must have happened first.

– If you think it starts with an injury, a hole in the bottom closer to the bow than the middle of the boat, then the bow is weighed down by the ingress of water. The bow visor gets more stress and shortcomings, Anders Ulfvarson tells Aftonbladet.

The Estonian Expert: You can rule out bouldering

He bases his conclusion about the course of events on the testimonies of the survivors who on deck two saw cold water flow down and the water flow out of the closed doors to the car tire.

– When you locate the cabins, you see that this is exactly where the newly discovered damage is located. Just there. The connection to damage and water ingress is so strong that bouldering can be ruled out at the bottom, Anders Ulfvarson tells Aftonbladet.

However, you don’t want to speculate on how the hole itself came about.
