The question of whether there will be a government crisis or not is resolved in the future, says political scientist Jenny Madestam after the party leader’s debate.

The tone of the debate was not as strange as she thought it might be.

The eight party leaders gathered in the SVT studio Sunday night to discuss crime, the weather, employment and elder care. The issue of employment and labor law was the hottest beforehand and also became the first topic of the evening.

Jonas Sjöstedt (V) has threatened a no-confidence motion against the government as there was no agreement on the last issue last week. Under the January agreement, the government will proceed with the research proposal that was presented this spring.

Finally, Sjöstedt gave Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S) a period of a few weeks on labor law.

“Surprisingly factual”

Jenny Madestam, associate professor of political science at the University of Södertörn, had predicted a harsh and sometimes tense tone. But that did not happen.

– It was surprisingly factual. I think there were many voters who perceived that they still had answers to their questions. It was not a cake toss as it could have been.

She thinks that Stefan Löfven was at the forefront during the debate tonight, especially on the subject of labor law.

– You can tell that he knows it and that he is very involved in the subject. He was much more energetic and on track than he usually is.

Ulf Kristersson (M) is also featured by Jenny Madestam.

– He has been involved in various debates of party leaders and has become the role. He managed to say that he really wants to praise some of the things the government has done. Being able to praise your opponents can be a pretty good move. Voters can appreciate that they are not just barking at each other.

Jenny Madestam also points out Per Bolund (MP).

– It was probably Per Bolund’s best party leader debate. He seemed safer and much warmer in his clothes. Bolund managed to show today that he and the Green Party can speak out on many different issues and not just about the environment and climate.

Difficult topic

The last topic of discussion of the evening was the care of the elderly.

– It is a difficult issue to debate because it is an issue of the municipalities that have leadership. Then it will be a bit complicated for national politicians to indicate what kind of investments to make and how far to go in governance.

– The duel between Ebba Busch (KD and Nyamko Sabuni (L) was almost a bit parodic at times because they coincide a lot. It was like a conversation between two people who actually think quite similarly about what you want to do for something.

Fixed: In previous versions of the text, the wrong number of party leaders was indicated, as well as an incorrect designation at the University of Södertörn.
