The Austrian capital, Vienna’s Social Democratic mayor Michael Ludwig, remains in office after Sunday’s elections, according to initial polls.

The far-right FPÖ party completely collapsed and lost more than 23 percentage points. It gets just over 7 percent according to polls.

The FPÖ collapsed nationally following a scandal in May 2019, where hidden recordings show how then-party leader Heinz-Christian Strache offered public contracts in exchange for election campaign assistance in conversations with a woman he thought was related to a Russian oligarch.

The revelation led to a crisis of government in Austria and the right-wing party has lost almost all its influence.

In the local elections in Vienna, Ludwig’s SPÖ social democratic party received almost 42 percent, two percentage points more compared to the 2015 elections, according to polls. Therefore, Ludwig can choose whether he wants to continue a collaboration with the Greens or choose a new coalition partner.
