Staff puts paper in patients’ mouths

There are several employees in care in the Karlshamn municipality who are behind a Sarah Lex report to the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate.

Enrollment is based on your experience from several visits to one of the municipality’s special homes. At one point, they were sitting in the office talking to other staff members when a patient in their room yelled “hi, can you hear me?” with strong anxiety in the voice, according to the report.

So an employee must have stood up and yelled, among other things, “why are you yelling now again?” and “we can’t bear hearing your screams, you have to think about the others who live here, do you understand?”

Staff in the hall also did not go to the patient who asked for help, the report said. Instead, someone was heard saying that the person “can sit there and scream.”

Alarm removed

On another occasion, an employee is said to have spoken out loud “with aggressiveness in his voice” and said “if you don’t move the mentally ill idiot who gets lost soon, I will take sick leave,” according to the whistleblower.

When one of the people behind the report spoke to the patient in question, he said that employees “put paper in their mouths so I don’t yell.” Also, they must have removed the person’s alarm when they think too much is being used and if the resident yells, staff often bark at him, according to the report.

The report also states that there is a culture in the work group in which “several strong people put their personal value in their professional role.”

Municipality: “It’s serious”

Karlshamn care manager Torill Skaar Magnusson tells SVT Nyheter Blekinge that the municipality is conducting an investigation and will find out who did what.

Those involved run the risk of losing their jobs, he explains.

– This is serious, regrettable and does not belong to the profession. I find it hard to understand that people can treat a person this way, says Torill Skaar Magnusson to SVT.
