President Sooronbaj Jeenbekov is trying to strengthen his grip on power in troubled Kyrgyzstan. He has renewed the highest level of the country’s security authorities and ensured that the former president convicted of corruption, Almazbek Atambayev, is arrested again.
Atambayev is one of the main opponents of the current president. He was released by protesters only a few days ago, but is now locked up again since special forces stormed his home, his spokesman says.
At the same time, Parliament has formally appointed Sadyr Khaparov as prime minister in an attempt to form a new government and end the power vacuum in the country. Kyrgyzstan has lacked clear political leadership after the country plunged into chaos following the controversial October 4 parliamentary elections.
