Amy Williams, from Essex, England, had forgotten that she was sitting with a tampon.
A week later, he was dying of toxic shock syndrome, popularly known as tampon disease.
– The doctor said that if I had not gone that day, I would never have woken up again.
Amy Williams had used a tampon as a sanitary pad for ten years when in June 2019 she was dying of one.
She went out to dinner with her boyfriend when she was about to change her tampon. He couldn’t find the string or feel the tampon, so he assumed there was no one inside. She then continued to change her sanitary pads as usual for the rest of the period.
Five days later he smelled a musty smell.
Was passing out
– It smelled like death and didn’t feel normal. So I went into the shower to wash myself, but the stench was left behind, he tells the Daily Mail.
– Then I lay down on the bed and looked inside. I felt something with my nail and realized that it was a tampon inside me. I was completely terrified.
The tampon had been placed on its side and it took half an hour to come out. Amy tells the British newspaper that she nearly passed out from the pain.
– When he came out, I felt an overwhelming avalanche, I felt like I was going to pass out. The tampon was completely black, it was disgusting.
Two days of painful cramps followed, but Amy went to work as usual. Then he started to feel bad and a colleague commented that he looked like he was about to die.
Close to death
He rushed to the hospital where his temperature was almost 40 degrees. He started vomiting and the medical staff quickly gave him a drop of antibiotics.
– I said I forgot a tampon for five days and they seemed worried. Then they said my blood levels were 264. The normal value was five.
The body of Amy Williams, 24, had begun to fail and she had received septic shock. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with Toxic Shock Syndrome or TSS, popularly known as tampon disease.
– The doctor said if I had not gone to the hospital that day, I would never have woken up again. I was terrified.
Toxic shock syndrome is very rare, and although it is called tampon disease, it is rarely due to tampons. But the disease can become serious and, at worst, life-threatening if the victim is not cared for.
“I cried and asked the nurse if I would ever see my son again,” Amy told the newspaper.
For the next four days, Amy wavered between consciousness and lethargy.

Her period has always been irregular since it happened last summer and Amy was afraid she would never have children again.
– I can’t believe a tampon is taking my life.
She is now pregnant with her second child, but says she will never use a tampon again.
– Be careful when using tampons. It was about to be my death, he says.
