Great floods in Umeå: walls are being built around Tvärån

On Saturday, the rescue service in Umeå received several alarms about flooding and basements filled with water after heavy rains overnight.

Tvärån, which runs through the Rödäng district, flooded and collapsed and now threatens to penetrate houses.

– There is water to the bottom, where we do not know if it has penetrated. It’s like a pool of water around properties, says Christer Björkman.

Now the rescue service and the municipality are working, among other things, with excavators to build levees around the river and stop the flooding.

Anders Öqvist lives in the area and says he goes out by the stairs outside the front door, but not anymore.

– I live where it is almost the worst. I go out the stairs, but then it almost goes over the shaft of the boot, he says.

However, the water has not penetrated him or his neighbors and now appears to be slowly receding, according to him.

– We hope it won’t rain more today, he says.

Flooded basements

Other parts of Umeå have also been affected by the floods. In Haga, the rescue service had to move into several cellars filled with water.

– It is now bright sunshine and the forecast says it may rain tonight and tomorrow morning. Not as strong as it has been before so hopefully it has time to escape before then, says Christer Björkman.
