FC Copenhagen have had a tough autumn outing in Europe and are way down in the Danish league standings. Now coach Ståle Solbakken gets the slap. He is fired with immediate effect.
– Results in 2020 have not been satisfactory, says club president Bo Rygaard on the club’s website.
Ståle Solbakken has embodied the successes of FC Copenhagen in many ways.
Ståle Solbakken ended his playing career at FC Copenhagen and has since had two long and successful spells as a coach. First during the years 2006-2011 and now since 2013.
However, after losing the group victory in the Europa League, the team followed with a cry of anguish and managed to advance into the round of 16. They beat Celtic and Turkish Besaksehir and only had to surrender after extra time against Manchester United in the quarter-finals.
But the fall has been heavy. It was a departure from the European game and after four rounds in the Danish league, FCK have only collected four points. The Bröndby leader has twelve.
It has been brewing at the club for a while and Ståle Solbakken himself said a few weeks ago that he accepted if they took him out, but that it would be wrong to throw away everything the club has built.
Now President Bo Rygaard says this on the club’s website:
– Ståle is without comparison the most successful manager in club history with an impressive list of results. Everyone who is part of FCK owes Ståle a big thank you for the enormous effort he has put into the club and the results it has created. However, we must affirm that the results in 2020 have not been satisfactory and now we are assuming the consequences of that.
– Every era has an end and we feel that now is the time for new forces to step in and build on the solid foundation that Ståle and his team have created. It was a difficult decision both factually and emotionally, but we have thought about it for too long and hard and believe that this is for the best in the situation we are in.
Until further notice, U-19 coach Hjalte Bo Børregaard will take over as coach with former team captain William Kvist as assistant.
