Another Swedish star goalkeeper gets a new club management.
Jacob Markström, 30, leaves Vancouver for Calgary.
There he gets a dream deal for a total value of over SEK 300 million.
Markström is coming off his best season yet in his career and therefore demanded a hefty pay to stay with the Canucks.
But the parties disagreed.
The Canucks wanted to invest in their up-and-coming 24-year-old goalkeeper Thatcher Demko and hire a cheaper veteran as a supplement.
So it was.
Shortly after 7 p.m. Friday night, it was confirmed that Vancouver will sign former Washington Capitals goalkeeper Braden Holtby to a two-year deal worth $ 4.3 million per season.
Get a monster salary
Markström, in turn, remains in Canada, but now ends up at the Calgary Flames, where he becomes teammates with several Swedish players, including Elias Lindholm and Mikael Backlund.
– I am very happy and I feel cruelly labeled, he says.
Now he also gets his long-awaited gigantic contract. Markström has signed a six-year contract with an annual salary of $ 6 million per season. Therefore, the total value of the agreement is 36 million dollars, which corresponds to almost 320 million crowns at the current exchange rate.
– Calgary really loved me and made a good offer. It also seems like the club has something big going on and I’m looking forward to being part of the investment, says Markström. according to Aaron Vickers, NHL reporter.
Best paid
Of the more than 20 players who received new club addresses on Friday night, “Markan” was the highest paid. He’s also now the highest-paid Swedish goalkeeper in the NHL, since Henrik Lundqvist was bought out of his contract with the New York Rangers and signed by the Washington Capitals.
The Edmonton Oilers were also interested in Markström’s services, but had to “settle” for another Swede, namely Anton Forsberg, 27, previously in Chicago and Carolina.
