Henrik Lundqvist’s end at the New York Rangers probably didn’t turn out like anyone had imagined a few years ago.
In late September, the club bought him and it was unclear where and if he would continue his career.
Now it is clear that he will stay in the US and become partners with Nicklas Bäckström.
There was much speculation about what would happen to “Henke’s” continuing career. From the beginning, information began to leak that he would sign a contract with 2018 champion Washington Capitals, something that now turns out to be true.
When the open market opened on Friday, Lundqvist was featured by Capitals. He has signed a one-year, $ 1.5 million deal with the club that is still considered one of the Stanley Cup contenders.

However, due to the acquired contract, the Rangers will have to pay Lundqvist $ 3 million over two years. That means he will make $ 4.5 million on the new salary plus the purchase money, which was the remaining salary from his contract with New York.
Lundqvist is one of the best Swedish goalkeepers of all time and set many records for Rangers. Among other things, he has the most wins (459) of a Rangers goalie and is also sixth in NHL history in the same category.
The 38-year-old is expected to be a backup at Capitals and act as a good mentor to shooting star Ilya Samsonov.
