It was a weak Norway that fell to Serbia in the playoff game for the European Championship on Thursday night. And it was not too late for Lagerbäck to agree.
– We will probably find ourselves with the best play-off team and we will not reach our normal standard, we do not play as we should.
In the Norwegian media, the tone was harsh and Lagerbäck’s Norway was quite harsh. Even on Twitter, the verdict was harsh. Terms like “Swedish infiltrator” appeared, but also voices that Lagerbäck has done very well for Norway, but that it is time to move on.
Without end in itself
After the game, Lars Lagerbäck was reluctant to talk about his future as captain of the Norwegian team.
– This is not an end in itself for me. If the employer thinks I shouldn’t lead this, or if I come to that conclusion myself, I have no problem standing aside.
– I’m not leaving tonight anyway.
The union supports
On Friday, the general secretary of the Norwegian Football Association, Terje Svendsen, spoke in favor of Lars Lagerbäck.
– There is no doubt for us. He has a contract until 2022 and we are dealing with that. We do an assessment after each season and the starting point right now is that we relate to the contract, he says according to TT.
