The Swedish Migration Agency notifies 172 employees, of which 43 in Malmö. The notices are part of an ongoing reduction in authority and will continue in the future.
In total, the Swedish Migration Agency notifies 172 employees across the country. The reduction is due to the reduction in the number of asylum seekers, which has led to a shortage of work. The notice concerns both operational activities and central office departments.
“The number of asylum seekers has been steadily declining since 2016 and appears to continue to decline. A natural effect of this will then be that the authority has a continuing need to scale back operations, ”says Annette Bäcklund, chair of the adjustment council of the Swedish Migration Agency, in a press release.
Local departments where staff are notified have informed their employees on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
– We have been in a reduction phase for several years, so this is no surprise, says the president of the Migration Board of the SACO union, John Andén.
Expect to receive more notices in the future. Before the large number of refugees arriving in 2014 and 2015, the Swedish Immigration Board employed just over 4,000. In 2016, when the number of asylum seekers reached its highest level, the number of employees was 9,000.
Currently, the Swedish Migration Agency has just under 6,000 employees and the goal at the moment is to return to the number of employees it had before 2014.
– This is probably not the last notice. These are difficult processes that we try to make as bad as possible, but there is nothing to pray for. We’re knocking down, says John Andén.
Negotiations on the layoffs are tentatively expected to last until mid-December.
