Today, the Nobel Committee presents who, or who, will receive the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize. Beforehand, the speculation has been about Greta Thunberg and the organization Fridays for future, as well as the UN World Health Organization, WHO.
The Norwegian Research Institute for Peace Prio, in turn, also mentions, among others, the Committee for the Protection of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders.
“Too often assigned to a man”
At Svenska Freds, another name is expected: Women’s International Federation for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).
– We always hope that civil society and the rank and file, rather than those in power, will receive the Nobel Peace Prize. There are an incredible number of people organizing to build sustainable peace and change destructive structures, but too often the peace prize is awarded to a president or a man who has hundreds of thousands of organized women who are not visible. in the background, says the president of Swedish Peace, Agnes Hellström.
It notes that 20 years have passed since UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security was introduced.
– We hope it is noticed perhaps by giving the award to a feminist grassroots movement. WILPF has been around for 100 years and operates in 50 countries. Giving the award to that movement would be tied to quite a few positive initiatives and peace movements in the world right now.
Two of the founders of the organization have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Jane Addams in 1931 and Emily Green Balch in 1946.
“A worthy and timely price”
Among other things, WILPF has been involved in the peaceful protests in Sudan and in peace talks with the Taliban in Afghanistan.
– I think they would have been a worthy and appropriate price at the time.
How likely is WILPF to receive the award?
– They are not pre-nominated, but they have been nominated for quite a few years and they really should receive the award because I don’t think there is any other organization that has continuously worked for so many years for sustainable peace. Hope is rarely quenched.
“Great choice”
Agnes Hellström points out that she also thinks Greta Thunberg and Fridays for future are a good winner.
– Raising base movements is a great option.
What do you think of the possibilities of Donald Trump?
– Just because someone is nominated does not mean that the candidate meets the criteria.
