On Thursday, the Crime Prevention Council, Brå, released its 2020 national security survey. It shows that the proportion of people concerned about crime in society has risen from 43 percent to 47 percent. According to Brå, this is the highest level since the survey began in 2006 and it is among young men aged 16 to 19 that anxiety has increased the most, from 22 to 32 percent since 2017. Particularly great is concern about thefts that has increased from eleven percent in 2017 to 19 percent during the period.

– There is a clear trend that fear of crime has increased among young men and robbery is the type of crime in which fear of exposure has increased most clearly. However, it should be noted that although young men’s concerns have increased more clearly, it is generally women who are most concerned, says Maria Molin, Brå’s project manager in a press release.

According to the survey, there is also an upward trend in actual exposure to robbery, where the proportion of young men who say they have been exposed has increased from 2.5 percent in 2016 to 5.9 percent in 2019. Among women , the increase is from 0.7 percent to 1.2 percent during the same period.

Greater trust in the police

The survey also shows that trust in the police has increased from 42 to 54 percentage points and that trust in the judiciary as a whole has increased from 44 percent to 49 percent.

The Brå National Security Survey, which is part of Sweden’s official statistics, is conducted annually and is based on surveys sent to a sample of 200,000 people between the ages of 16 and 84. Of these, more than 70,000 have responded.
