The earth was hotter last month than in any other September globally. This year’s temperatures are so far in line with those recorded in 2016, the warmest year measured so far, according to the EU’s climate research center Copernicus.

– It is absolutely remarkable, but not directly surprising, says Pererik Åberg, meteorologist.

Globally, September this year was 0.05 degrees warmer than 2019 and 0.08 degrees warmer than 2016, the years in which September has so far been the warmest and second-warmest in history. According to Copernicus Climate Change Service.

2020 could also be the warmest year on record, depending on what fall will be like.

– If it is a harsh autumn with high temperatures until December, chances are good that this year will be the warmest in history, says SVT meteorologist Pererik Åberg.
