Danielle Collins.
In the middle of the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament.
So Danielle Collins sends her biggest supporter, her boyfriend Tom Couch, out of the stands.
– I’m distracted, yells Collins on the track.
In adversity, it’s easy to blame those who cheer you on. So did Danielle Collins in the quarterfinals of the French Open.
The 26-year-old American had lost the first set to compatriot Sofia Kenin. In the next, Collins began serving and went 30-0, then committed three straight double errors. Although she managed to save that game, she had identified the problem.
– Sit somewhere else. Sit somewhere else! I’m distracted, Collins yells at her boyfriend Tom Couch, who got up and left the relatively empty rostrum in Paris.
“Not up”
It paid off in the seat he took 6-4. But the effect wore off, and in the decisive third set Kenin won 6-0. If it was because Collins saw Couch in his new spot in the stands, we left it unsaid.
– My start to the game was bad, I expected otherwise. Sofia made some fantastic shots, her tennis was top-notch, so unfortunately that wasn’t my case. I misjudged a lot of shots, says Danielle Collins.
In the semi-finals of the French Open, world sixth Kenin will face Czech world elf Petra Kvitova.
