Alexei Navalny has long been one of the main critics of President Vladimir Putin and the Russian government. He collapsed during a flight over Russia in August and initially received intensive care at a Siberian hospital. It wasn’t long before his spokesperson, Kira Yarmysh, stated that Navalny was believed to have been poisoned with the neurotoxin novitjok.
He has been treated at the Charité Hospital in Berlin since the end of August. There, German doctors discovered that Navalny was poisoned with the neurotoxin developed by the Soviets. The same substance was also used against former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in the English city of Salisbury two years ago.
Impose sanctions
France and Germany will now impose sanctions on specific people they believe are responsible for the poisoning of Alexei Navalny. This comes after Russia failed to provide a convincing explanation, according to the countries’ foreign ministers.
“So far Russia has not given a credible explanation,” they said in a statement.
The sanctions proposals will be discussed soon with other EU countries.
– The sanctions proposals will be directed at people who we believe have been responsible for this crime and the violation of international norms, it says in a statement.
