Total EU emissions should be reduced by 60% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. At least that is what MEPs think in a vote in Brussels.
– I feel a wave of happiness. This is the happiest day I have had in Parliament, both for me and for the climate, says Swedish MEP Jytte Guteland (S), who is responsible for examining the proposal by the European Parliament.
The 60 line won the vote by 352 votes to 326. Many of the conservatives and members of the Eastern countries preferred 55%, which is what the European Commission has proposed.
However, what the figure will eventually be will not be decided until after negotiations with EU member states, which will agree on their line at the end of October. So far, the EU has had a goal of reducing emissions by 20 percent by 2030.
