The brothers Edward and Alex Van Halen were born in the Netherlands but immigrated to the United States in the early 1960s. They formed their first band in the 1970s. After renting a sound system from singer David Lee Roth, it was decided to let him join the band. According to David Lee Roth, it was he who came up with the idea to take the siblings’ last names and turn them into band names, like Santana.
According to Eddie Van Halen, he really wanted to play drums, but after hearing his brother try his first drums, he changed his mind and took over the guitar.

He suffered from tongue cancer in 2000 and underwent surgery to remove a third of his tongue. He was declared healthy three years later. In recent years, it has been rumored that he traveled to Germany for treatment of throat cancer.
