According to Lars Nordström, professor of electrical energy at KTH, the unattended power grid can mean that we run the risk of losing large establishments.
– The concern is that we may lose the opportunity to offer this type of establishment in Sweden because we do not have time, or we can or possibly want to, it is a matter of prioritizing, strengthening the electricity grid quickly enough. Unfortunately, there are faster shocks in the digital industry than in infrastructure and electricity, says Lars Nordström.
The problem is not themselves electricity production of which Sweden has a surplus, but it is the capacity of the power grid that cannot withstand the pressure.
According to Aftonbladet, some of these server rooms are expected to consume 500 megawatts, almost double the electricity consumed by all of Uppsala. Uppsala, along with Stockholm, Malmö and Västerås, are identified as cities that urgently need to strengthen and expand the electricity grid, according to the Electricity Market Inspection report.
Lack of resources can also affect the expansion of new residential areas. In response to the information, Energy Minister Anders Ygeman says that the expansion of the main grid will triple in the coming years.
– But we must also make this faster because today it takes too long to build new power lines in Sweden and therefore I will soon put forward new proposals that will considerably reduce the time it takes to build power networks. For some major power grid lines, we will cut two years during the construction period and for other major power grid extensions, we will cut the construction period in half.
