Rock legend and guitar virtuoso Eddie Van Halen co-founded the rock band Van Halen with his brother Alex in 1972. The group’s most famous song is 1984’s “Jump.” The band released twelve albums, the last of which , “A Different Kind of Truth”, in 2012. Eddie Van Halen also played solo on Michael Jackson’s “Beat it” in 1982.
Eddie Van Halen, originally from the Netherlands, died at St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica on Tuesday morning local time. He was surrounded by his wife Janie and son Wolfgang, writes the entertainment site TMZ.
Wolfgang Van Halen, who has been a bass player on Van Halen since 2006, writes on Twitter that his father’s death has broken his heart.
“I don’t understand why I have to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, lost a long and hard battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could have. Every moment with him on and off stage was a gift. ”.
Tributes to Eddie Van Halen began to reach social media as soon as the death was known.
“The sky will be electric tonight,” writes artist Lenny Kravitz on Twitter.
“Eddie Van Halen was a great guitarist and I remember how great Van Halen was, especially here in Los Angeles,” writes Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.
Gene Simmons, singer and bassist for the band Kiss, writes on Twitter:
“My heart is broken. Eddie was not only a guitar god, but also a truly beautiful soul. Rest in peace Eddie.”
Guitarist Janne Schaffer tells TT that Eddie Van Halen’s death means that another of music’s greats has passed away.
– It is very sad. It has meant a lot, says Schaffer and continues:
– When you heard him play, you knew immediately that it was Eddie van Halen. He really created his own musical identity.
Schaffer describes Van Halen’s contribution to music saying that he was at the forefront of technology development work for playing the guitar.
– He had a dazzling technique but at the same time a genuine expression. Sometimes it is said that you should not have too much technology, but I think in his case it was a great asset.
According to TMZ, Eddie Van Halen suffered from throat cancer more than ten years ago. His condition worsened as the cancer spread to other organs.
