Trump’s statements about not being afraid of COVID-19 are irresponsible, says Carlos del Río, a doctor and professor of medicine.

– It’s very irresponsible. So many people have died and so many have suffered as a result of covid, he says.

Trump is urging people not to be afraid of the corona virus and for people to get out.

Carlos del Río, professor of medicine and public health at American Emory University, calls the statements irresponsible.

– We must continue to protect ourselves against covid. The president should know better.

TT: Do you think it affects people to be less careful?

– I think the president is making a mistake and is exposing people to danger. As president, you should protect the health of Americans, not say that everything is fine. The United States has 7 million infected and more than 200,000 deaths. This is something that nobody has wanted to see. And that the president could not protect himself is bad, he says.

Great care staff

However, the president can count on continued good care in the White House. The presidential residence medical unit is responsible for the care of presidential and vice-presidential families, as well as emergency cases for all visitors. With previous presidents, it has been made up of a care team of about 20 people, where a doctor is never far from the head of state.

– It’s not like your house or mine. You have all the medical care you need. It is like a hospital where you can be treated. And the important thing is that it remains isolated for the next ten days. Let me tell you this: it is not unreasonable for me to return to the White House.

The president says he feels better than in 20 years. According to Carlos del Río, this is not so strange, given that he has been treated with the steroid dexamethasone.

– It’s probably just an effect of the steroids. It can definitely make one feel more vital, he says.

Hope in the distance

In the near future, it will be important to monitor the oxygenation and vital functions of the president. But it will take some time to recover.

– I would say that if you are still mostly at home, isolated and taking your medication, you will gradually improve, says Carlos del Río.

Several people in the vicinity of Donald Trump have been infected with the corona virus, including press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, adviser Hope Hicks and campaign manager Bill Stepien.

– I hope the White House starts wearing mouth guards and keeping their distance, but so far I haven’t seen much of that, says del Rio.
