A police officer in Malmö is on trial for breach of confidentiality after she tried to communicate with a 21-year-old man who was wanted on suspicion of murder, Sydsvenskan reports.

The police, who in their professional role had previously had contact with the 21-year-old, called to persuade him to voluntarily surrender. However, the phone number turned out to be old and someone else answered.

This meant that the murder suspect never found out that he was wanted. Despite this, the chief prosecutor Martín Tidén of the Special Prosecutor’s Office considers the event to be serious.

– It could have had dire consequences. But as far as we know, it had no effect, he tells Sydsvenskan.

The police deny any wrongdoing. She states during questioning that she was instructed to make the call and assumed that the 21-year-old knew he was wanted.
