Wolfgang Pichler has woken up and feels good under the circumstances.
– He has asked about the French Open in tennis and indicates that he is back, his brother Claus Pichler tells Sportbladet.
It’s been a week since the biathlon world received shocking news that Wolfgang Pichler suffered a heart attack during a bike training session with friends outside his hometown of Ruhpolding.
According to the German newspaper Bild, Pichler fell off his bicycle when he suffered a heart attack and also suffered head injuries. It is said that he was resuscitated on the spot and then anesthetized in a coma at Traunstein hospital.

Now Sportbladet can tell you that Pichler has woken up. It is announced by his brother Claus in an interview.
– Considering he had a heart attack, that’s fine, Claus tells Sportbladet.
– On Thursday they removed the tube that gave him artificial respiration. Since then, Wolfgang has slowly but surely returned. You can breathe and speak. Doctors are very happy with his progress and say that everything is normal depending on the circumstances. But he is very tired and needs a lot of rest.

The legend of the 65-year-old coach remains in the intensive care unit.
– You don’t remember anything that happened. But it is normal according to the doctors. All the tests so far indicate that you are on the right track and that you do not need any additional surgery.
Claus Pichler was for many years, until May this year, mayor of Ruhpolding. He is currently retired.
– We have high hopes that he will return to a normal life. Given how you’ve asked about the French Open in tennis, it indicates you’re on your way back. Of course, it comes in handy now that you’ve spent a lifetime in sports and have such a great physique. Doctors believe that it will help you return to a normal life.
Wolfgang Pichler is a lover of tennis in general. He has played himself and has also been a professional tennis coach.
There is no plan for when you can go home. After intensive care, you will probably have to wait weeks of rehabilitation in the hospital.
– It can probably be a shock to him when he realizes what happened to him.
Only the wife can visit
Since the WC at Östersund 2019, he has been employed by SOK as a talent developer in the Olympic Offensive project, with the responsibility of preparing the young Winter Olympics for an investment towards the world top.
Claus himself has not yet been able to meet his brother. Due to crown restrictions, only Wolfgang’s wife can visit him. In a couple of days, Claus hopes to talk to his brother on the phone.

We are incredibly touched by all the support from everyone who has heard from Sweden with messages, emails and phone calls. I just don’t have time to answer everything. But I’m sure they’ll give Wolfgang a boost, says Claus Pichler.
