Three consecutive Premier League wins and a star-studded team, however, it was Aston Villa who started off absolutely better at Villa Park.
The journey to the humiliating 7-2 result started off right after just a few minutes in Birmingham. Ollie Watkins made it 1-0, breaking Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian’s goal.
After that, it just flowed.
Watkins himself extended the home side’s lead after about 15 minutes and by the end of the first half the 25-year-old had scored a hat-trick, John McGinn scored and Mohamed Salah reduced.
Should there be more goals from Aston Villa? Clearly.
At the start of the second act, new acquisition Ross Barkley scored his first goal for his new club. The Englishman, on loan from Chelsea, shot it 5-1 after a play by compatriot Jack Grealish.
Shortly after, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah returned to paint and a few minutes later, in the 66th minute, the network called Grealish 6-2.
Just over 15 minutes before referee Martin Atkinson decided to blow the goal feast, it was again Jack Grealish’s turn to put the ball behind Liverpool’s Adrian.
The result of the match was thus 7-2.
– It is absolutely amazing to score three goals, although it really should have been responsible for another full blow when you look back. But it’s fun to be able to contribute and especially win, says three-goal shooter Ollie Watkins after the game against Sky Sports.
Jurgen Klopp, in turn, was not so happy afterwards.
– Who wants to lose 7-2? A few years ago, we told ourselves that we wanted to make history. This was clearly the wrong story, the coach told the BBC.
