Four out of ten farmers respond in a survey that they have been exposed to crimes directed against them in their capacity as farmers, writes the agricultural business magazine ATL.
More than 3,800 farmers with companies in the sheep, pig, beef or mink sector responded to the survey included in a report by the Royal Stockholm Institute of Technology.
– Those who commit crimes against farmers are often motivated by political or economic driving forces, says report author Jonathan Abraham, from KTH to ATL.
Crimes are most frequently committed in southern Sweden. National security crimes, vandalism and theft are the most common crimes farmers are exposed to, the newspaper writes.
Only 30 percent of respondents who have been exposed to crime reported it to the police. Willingness to report is low due to uncertainty over whether it will lead to prosecution, according to the report.
