Petra de Sutter is the new Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium, and trans

Petra De Sutter became the first transgender person in Belgian history to be elected to the country’s parliament in 2014 and later to the European Parliament.

Now, the 57-year-old gynecology professor is breaking historic ground again when she takes a seat in the Belgian government as one of seven deputy prime ministers.

She will also be the Minister of State responsible for state companies.

“I hope they can spark the debate”

On Sunday, she tweeted a photo of herself during the swearing-in ceremony as she was sworn in as deputy prime minister.

“I am proud that in Belgium and most of the EU, your gender identity does not define who you are as a person, and that is not a problem,” she wrote on the photo, adding:

“I hope my appointment as minister and deputy prime minister can spark a debate in those countries where this is not the case.
